In Good Company

I call these Tuesday musings love letters because they come from my heart and they are comprised of words and letters. Writing is definitely a love language for me and the most efficient way for me to express myself. But since I've arrived back in the USA, I've received love letters of many forms, not necessarily written.

When I hop across the pond, I usually race back to my little island of Nantucket where I was born and raised, bypassing most of continental America. But in keeping with my nomadic summer, I carved out some time to spend in good company before I head to the island today. In just five days I've slept in three different beds and stepped through three different states to spend time with friends from all phases and stages of my life.

Here's what I learned. Love letters come in the form of rides from the airport and super cozy beds with the softest sheets ever. They come in the form of five pm brunch in a sunny New York City sidewalk restaurant. In sharing laughs over silly games and cozying up on the couch with water and wine. Love letters can be handwritten and hand-delivered over coffee on quiet Sunday city streets or they can simply be in the form of a hug after many many years. Love letters are fresh flowers and seaside bunk beds, homemade meals, packed picnics, dinners out, days off, and truck stop chip indulgences or Reese's runs. Pickups, drop-offs, beach days and beach walks, diet cokes, grumpy dogs, smooth stones, and curious toddlers who are willing to make shapes in the sand and throw rocks in the sea. All of these are expressions of love.

I learned that sometimes, you can ask for the simplest things and get the most beautiful responses. I asked for the space, time, and friendship of some very precious people in these last days, and in return, I was gifted an abundance of love. So, as we start off a new month, I'm wondering where you are finding love letters in your life? Are you looking for them? Are you writing your own? What are you asking for?

I leave you with a quote that I received via a written love letter this past week:

“There is nothing you can see that is not a flower; there is nothing you can think that is not the moon.”
― Matsuo Basho

So to all my dear friends near and far, thank you for showing me the flowers and sharing the moon.

Sending love,

Henna
